Today while on my computer I thought I look up to see who was the first female artist and I was very surprised I even got any info. The first woman artist was Artemisia Gentileschi who was born on the 8th July 1593. Artemisia was classed as the greatest female Painter of the Baroque period. She develop her painting skills with the help of her father Orazio, Who was known as a accomplished painter himself. Orazio was influenced by Caravaggio, they had a short friendship.

Artemisia lost her mother when she was 12 years old and another tragedy hit her 5 years later was she was raped by a colleague of her father, He was  Agostino Tassi who refused to marry her , her father decided to bring a legal case and take him to court. It took several months to finalise it . Tassi was ordered to leave rome, but the order was never enforced.

Artemisia married a painter from Florence his name was Pietro Antonio di Vincenzo Stiattesi. Artemisia and her new husband moved to florence and together they had one daughter. The marriage was not  a happy one but this is where it gave her a chance to flourish as an artist.

While living in Florence, Artemisia enjoyed the patronage of Cosimo de Medici, the grand Duke of Tuscany, among others. In the year 1627, she received a commision from King Philip IV of spain. She be friended many artist, writers and thinkers of her time, including famed astronomer Galileo.
